A quiet rainy morning at a kitchen table with coffee, a notebook and a closed laptop

What I still do on an ugly week

•

An ugly week is not when I need a new system. The normal day already feels like too much. A clever plan would just be one more thing to fail at.

Green Lights still sits in my head on weeks like this. Green means go. Yellow means slow down. Red means stop. On a bad week I am not hunting a big green light. I take the small chance to move, and I try not to push through a stop just so I can feel busy.

Three dull things, not a new me

In the morning, before the emails start, I clear the desk. Not a big tidy. Cups away. Notebook open. The page I actually need on top. If the desk is a mess, I feel messy too. It takes a few minutes. It is boring. It helps.

I keep a short checklist. Three things I would be glad I did before I stop. If the day goes sideways, I do not add seven more to make up for it. I look at the three. Some days I finish one. That still counts.

Before I leave work, I do a small end-of-day look. What is done. What can wait until tomorrow. What I am carrying that does not need to come home with me. I try to stop around six. The list stays on the desk.

If I can, I get to the gym earlier. Not to become someone else. Just so the week is not only meetings and a tight feeling in my chest. Some weeks I miss it. I do not give myself a talk about it. I go the next morning I can. If mornings are the bit that keeps falling over for you, I wrote morning routines that stick.

None of this fixes a tough time. It stops the tough time from taking every hour. What works for me may not work for you. On an ugly week I would rather do three dull things than try to design a better version of myself.
