Self-Compassion Without Complacency

•

A lot of ambitious people hear “be kinder to yourself” and flinch. It sounds like giving up. Soft excuses.

I flinched too. Then I noticed that my harsh inner voice did not make me better. It made me slower, more defensive, and more likely to hide mistakes. What I actually want is self-compassion without complacency: keep the bar, change the tone.

Keep the bar, change the tone

Self-compassion is not pretending the work was good when it wasn’t. It is not skipping the hard feedback. It is refusing to turn one miss into a full story about who you are.

Name the miss clearly. “That meeting was unclear.” Not “I am useless.” Keep the next useful action small. Fix the slide. Send the follow-up. Ask the question you avoided. Talk to yourself the way you would talk to a capable colleague who is learning — direct, not cruel.

Early in a career, or when you are levelling up, the pace and the expectations can feel heavy. Harshness on top of that rarely produces better work. If that voice also sounds like fraud, I wrote about how to overcome imposter syndrome at work.

I write from experience, not as a lecture. What works for me may not work for you. Keep your standards. Drop the courtroom in your head if it is not helping you improve.
