Emotional intelligence sounds soft until you watch a smart person send a sharp email and spend two days repairing the damage.
I am still learning this. When I look up how to build emotional intelligence, I do not want a personality theory. I want skills I can practise between meetings.
What EQ means in useful terms
For work, I keep it simple: notice what you feel, name it roughly, choose a response, relate to other people without mind-reading, and repair when you miss.
It is not never getting irritated. It is shortening the gap between miss and mend. It is also not people-pleasing. Chronic agreeableness can be low EQ wearing a smile — you avoid your own no, then resent everyone.
Why smart professionals still struggle
We over-index on analysis. Feelings get treated as noise. Or we treat other people’s emotions as problems to fix in thirty seconds. Or we are so focused on looking competent that we skip the awkward human bit.
EQ is a professional skill the same way clear writing is. You can be brilliant at your craft and clumsy here. Both can be true.
Everyday drills
- Notice and name. Before you reply, label: tense, embarrassed, rushed, disappointed. Naming reduces the fog a little.
- Pause the send. Draft the hot email. Wait ten minutes. Cut the first paragraph. Send the rest if it still needs sending.
- Curious question. In conflict: “What matters most to you in this?” beats winning the point.
- Repair fast. “I was sharp earlier — sorry. Here is what I meant.” Speed matters more than perfect wording.
- Boundary with warmth. Empathy without a spine becomes overload. You can care and still say no.
Myths to drop
EQ is not being nice all the time. It is not reading minds. It is not suppressing anger forever. Anger can be data — something important feels blocked. The skill is choosing what to do with that data.
If you lead people, your EQ sets the temperature of the room. Small repairs from you give others permission to be human too.
Emotional intelligence at work grows in reps. Pick one drill this week — naming before replies, or faster repairs. That is enough. You will still misread people. The goal is shorter messes and cleaner next steps.
